It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by environmental news.
Climate change, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss — the headlines can often feel relentless. But the truth is progress is happening 💪
Across the world, communities, scientists, and businesses are taking action that is beginning to shift the trajectory of some of our biggest environmental challenges. Governments too are starting to make meaningful shifts in policy—though not nearly enough, if you ask us.
The good news..
Here are five positive environmental stories from the recent news cycle that show rgr climate progress is possible.
1. Renewable Energy Is Overtaking Fossil Fuels in Europe
For the first time in history, wind and solar together produced more electricity than fossil fuels in the European Union. This marks a major milestone in the global transition to clean energy.
The rapid expansion of renewable infrastructure across Europe is proving that large economies can reduce reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining reliable electricity systems.
Renewable energy growth in Europe
-
2025: ~48% of EU electricity from renewables
-
5 years ago: ~34%
-
10 years ago: ~24%
In just a decade, renewable energy has doubled its share of Europe’s electricity mix, driven by investment in solar farms, wind power, and supportive climate policies.
2. Electric Vehicles Are Becoming Mainstream
Electric vehicles are rapidly becoming a major part of the global car market.
Worldwide EV sales increased roughly 27% in the past year, helping accelerate the shift away from petrol and diesel vehicles.
Global EV adoption
-
2026: ~20% of new cars sold globally are electric
-
5 years ago: ~4–5%
-
10 years ago: ~1%
Transportation is one of the largest contributors to global emissions, so the rapid growth of electric vehicles represents a major opportunity to reduce carbon pollution.

3. Chile Is Creating a Massive New National Park
Chile is planning a 150,000-hectare national park at Cape Froward, protecting sub-Antarctic forests, coastlines, and critical wildlife habitat.
The project has been supported by Rewilding Chile, a conservation organisation founded by the late philanthropist Douglas Tompkins.
In November, the foundation donated approximately 127,000 hectares of land to the Chilean government, on the condition that the land be protected as a national park within two years.
Large conservation areas like this help preserve biodiversity and protect ecosystems from development.

4. Fishing Communities Are Helping Protect Marine Wildlife
In parts of India, traditional fishing communities are now rescuing endangered marine species and helping restore ocean ecosystems.
Fishers along the Gulf of Mannar coast in southern Tamil Nadu once caught marine animals including:
-
Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins
-
Hawksbill turtles
-
Loggerhead turtles
-
Green turtles
-
Olive ridley turtles
-
Dugongs
Today, many of these same communities are recognised for protecting the very species they once pursued, highlighting how conservation efforts succeed when local communities are involved.
5. France Bans “Forever Chemicals” (PFAS)
France has introduced legislation banning certain products containing PFAS, often referred to as “forever chemicals.”
These chemicals are commonly used in:
-
Non-stick cookware
-
Waterproof and stain-resistant fabrics
-
Grease-proof food packaging
PFAS are problematic because they do not break down in nature and can accumulate in soil, water, wildlife, and the human body for decades.
PFAS were first developed in the late 1930s and became widely used in consumer products from the 1950s onward because they resist heat, water, and oil.
France’s new ban represents an important step toward reducing environmental contamination from persistent chemicals.
A Reminder That Progress Is Possible
The environmental challenges facing our planet are real — but so is the progress being made to address them.
From renewable energy expansion to wildlife protection and stronger chemical regulation, these stories show that collective action can drive meaningful change.
And every policy decision, technological breakthrough, and community effort helps move us closer to a more sustainable future.
